The Teaching Interpreting Educators and Mentors (TIEM) Center, LLC is committed to excellence and integrity in interpreting education, serving the needs of those interested in the effective preparation of sign language interpreters. This audience includes faculty, free-lance educators, mentors, ASL teachers, and practicing interpreters. We offer a wide-range of services for interpreting educators, mentors and researchers. These include advanced education and professional development opportunities, the design, implementation, and reporting of needs assessments, research support, and evaluation and assessment.

Our experience in the field of interpreting research and education is a strong foundation for the services we provide now. The TIEM Center staff has designed, developed and implemented curricula and courses for the Master Mentor Program, the Master in Education-Interpreting Pedagogy, as well as for numerous educational opportunities for interpreters and interpreter educators. Many of these programs are designed for offering online, to meet the needs of practitioners and educators across the globe. Our expertise in course and program design, as well as in online technology, extends to technical support for online seminars, as well as f2f training and workshops.

Our current projects span a variety of projects, including both national and international initiatives and include the development of an Annotated e-Repository of existing practices and products that will be searchable and accessible to the field. The Annotated e-Repository is intended to support quality educational opportunities for current and prospective interpreters, educators, and mentors. We are also leading the innovative Garbage In = Garbage Out: Source Text Selection for Interpreting Educators.

TIEM’s National Interpreter Education Center and the National Consortium (2005-2010)

From 2005-2010, we grew from a solely grant-funded Center to one that included supported both graduate education for interpreting faculty, independent research projects, and grant-related initiatives and projects.

Our work as the National Center allowed us to expand in many areas. Our grant-funded responsibilities required that we 1) coordinate the activities of the Regional Interpreter Education Centers; 2) ensure the effectiveness of the educational opportunities offered by the Regional Interpreter education Centers, 3) ensure the effectiveness of the program as a whole; 4) provide technical assistance in interpreter education; and 5) provide educational opportunities for interpreter educators. We were funded primarily by the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA), Grant #H160B050002, Training of Interpreters for Individuals Who Are Deaf and Individuals Who Are Deaf-Blind.

Our History: Legacy of Project TIEM.Online (2000-2005)

The TIEM Center began as a grant-funded center housed at the University of Colorado, Boulder, called Project TIEM.Online. From 2000-2005, Project TIEM.Online successfully achieved its funded grant objectives. Most notably, two curricula, one for training mentors (Master Mentor Program) and one for educating interpreting faculty (Masters in Interpreting Pedagogy), were developed following extensive research and input from the field. Both became graduate programs in Northeastern University’s College of Professional Studies, forming the core of the ASL Graduate Program until 2011. Although both closed in 2010, they are being revised and re-invigorated in new settings for future students.

In 2005, Project TIEM.Online applied for Department of Education funding to coordinate and evaluate the activities of five other RSA-funded regional centers, to conduct National Needs Assessments, to provide technical assistance, and to provide educational opportunities for interpreter educators. Funded for five years (2005-2010), Project TIEM assumed the responsibilities of the National Interpreter Education Center.
