Tacit, Explicit, Expressive Knowledge Model

This portal is dedicated to an understanding of the Tacit, Explicit, Expressive Knowledge Grid. This model is designed to maximize the understanding and utility of knowledge within organizations and in social networks.

Tacit knowledge, as understood in this context, is the knowledge we each obtain personally from experience, study, observation, etc.

Explicit knowledge is that which is documented in organized forms. This can include written documents, charts, graphs, advance organizers, database queries, web pages, and many other forms.

Expressive forms of knowledge are those that support processes -- step-by-step representations of know-how. Such forms of knowledge encapsulate learnings from tacit and explicit forms and can provide simulated experience as well as operational support for large numbers of people using computers and networks. This brings many benefits, including increased know-how, automatic documentation of steps taken, and comprehensive storage of process steps and outcomes data.

A healthy balance among these knowledge forms is considered important for consistent, comprehensive use of the knowledge of organizations and social networks. The flow of knowledge within organizations and social networks is critical to their success. One object of the TEE knowledge grid is to facilitate such flow, unimpeded by technology, the lack thereof, or a lack of knowledge of fluidity-enhancing models and techniques.

Explicit to tacit: Assign learner to review a document or other explicit form.

Explicit to explicit: Write a review or expand on current documentation.

Expressive to tacit: Assign learner to review a process.

Expressive to explicit: Generate document or report from process.

Expressive to expressive: Improve on processes and link them.
