The Mid-America Regional Interpreter Education (MARIE) Center is a resource center on interpreting and interpreter education housed at the University of Northern Colorado Distance Opportunity Interpreter Training (DO IT) Center. The MARIE Center works with regional and national stakeholders to provide and sponsor activities that will increase the number and quality of interpreters who are able to effectively interpret for consumers with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. To effectively accomplish these tasks and to maximize resources, expertise, funding, and leadership, MARIE collaborates with five other RSA-funded Centers across the United States to create the National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers (NCIEC). The Consortium works to build and strengthen partner networks with interpreter education programs, practitioners, educators, and consumers locally, regionally and nationally.
MARIE proudly serves the eleven states within its region which are Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Montana, New Mexico, North and South Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. MARIE is funded by the Department of Education, Rehabilitation Service Administration (RSA); grant #H160A100007. Two settings of particular focus for MARIE are preparing interpreters to work in settings where VR clients are served and preparing interpreters to work in legal settings. MARIE is also committed to increasing the Deaf Community’s ability to effectively obtain and utilize interpreters through the provision of peer-based, self-advocacy training.
